The likes of 2017's fan-made Sonic Mania does bring the series back to its roots, recalling the classic Sonic games of days gone by. While the Blue Blur's games have fallen on the wayside over the years, he is still continuing to zoom along on people's screens. If these are deliberate design choices, well then I guess my streak will continue. In 1991, the world got to experience a Sonic the Hedgehog game for the first time, and an immediate icon was born. I feel if these fix this two issues, the feeling of speed and momentum we all love and enjoy, will be there. Not knowing what was coming when you first did a level, and knowing what was every time after, enhanced the speed feeling of the blue hedgehog, made it feel more rewarding when you avoided obstacles or caught a glimpse of that alternate path. The original Sonic games (more so 1&2) are zoomed pretty close in, the parts in Sonic Forces where he goes through the S tubes and the camera zooms in, is a lot closer to the original camera zoom. This dilutes a lot of the "speed" feeling since objects stay on your screen, and in your vision, for much longer. You can see so much more of the screen, plus being wide aspect ration, allows you to see even more of what's behind and in front of you, while keeping Sonic small. Perhaps they thought the "slippery" controls of the original were not intended and "fixed" them, but it makes it terrible.Īnd I feel this is the BIG one: the camera is pulled WAY out. But there were a few points in this Sonic Forces video where it would dead stop coming out of a speed bumper or an inclined jump.

Granted it's still a pretty large drop from the speed you WERE going at, but I'm sure we could explain this away as momentum being transferred into an attack.

When you land without touching the D-pad, you sort of drift to finish off your momentum. The original Sonic games have this sort of slipperly slide going on. I popped in my Sonic 3 & Knuckles to play a level (since it's the more 'refined' of the early series and closer to what they're going for as far as gameplay) to compare. Loved the side scroller too much to switch. Disclaimer: I haven't touched a sonic game since Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast. So there are TWO things that I figured out that are bothering most of us, being an "old-ass gamer" it was REALLY bothering me too.
